Two brothers from Dhanbad develop a web search engine that safeguards your data and stops Fake news

With data breach and fake news being the biggest threat during the current pandemic situation, two brothers from Dhanbad have launched ‘13TABS’ ~ a unique search engine to check the authenticity of news and social media posts. Read the article for more details..

The motivation

In 2019, two brothers Sagar Mishra, aged 32 and Varun Mishra (29), both engineers by profession incorporated the company and got incubated in NASSCOM 10000 Startups. “When we started working on 13TABS all we wanted was to develop a search engine for the people of India.”
“The internet, one of the greatest inventions of mankind, is being used as a surveillance tool to collect private information, manipulate user behaviour, restrict information and keep users in their own world (filter bubble). We decided to put privacy at the core of 13TABS,” said Sagar Mishra.
They launched the prototype in December 2016, which was accessed from 59 countries and used for more than 3 million times.

Loopholes in existing search engines

The duo says that there are 3 major problems in existing search engines. Search engines trackers have access to personal data like search & browsing history, medical condition, political affiliation, etc. They create a profile of people habits even when they have not logged into their account and finally this collected data is used to manipulate their behaviour.

13TABS is different

“We respect your privacy and help prevent the spread of fake-news. Privacy is your right! We do not collect your private data. At 13TABS we believe in search neutrality and provide impartial search results. We help in ‘fact checking’ viral news or social media posts,” said co-founder Varun adding that the ‘Fact-check’ tool integrated with its result page lets users fact-check any news available to them.

Relevance of 13TABS in present situation

“In this current Covid situation, a lot of new information and research work are being shared on social media and news portals. It is important for the people to have access to verified information. Unfortunately, a lot of fake-news & misinformation are also being shared,” said Varun.

“During medical emergencies like these, a misinformation could lead to an unfortunate event. Since 13TABS offers unbiased search results & its fact checking tool helps a user to search fact-checked information about any viral social media posts, we believe it’s a must have tool for your mobile device. At the same time we would like to appeal that whenever you come across information related to your health & hygiene, always consult your doctor.”
