Promoting local handicraft items
Nazia Ali, a successful entrepreneur from Odisha at Bhubaneswar is a founder of lovely Obsessionz through which she promotes local Made Art and Craft over Chinese Imports, employs members of the local community and SHG’s.
Wanted to return to roots
Nazia, was living a comfortable life with her husband Zahid akhtar in Delhi till a few years ago. But she always wanted to go back to her roots in Odisha and stay among her own people. When she shared her idea with Zahid, he immediately agreed. The duo returned to Odisha in 2014 and settled in Bhubaneswar, the state capital. While Zahid became busy in his business, Nazia decided to do something of her own.
Chinese goods were devouring livelihood of local artisans
Soon, she discovered that Chinese gift items were flooding the market while local artisans were starving. Upset over the condition of the rural artisans, she decided to do something for them. The 36-year-old came up with lovely obsessionz to promote local handicraft items and sell them as gift items to corporate clients in 2016, “I was particularly upset to see the pathetic condition of the local handicraft artisans who were starving for customers due to the lack of proper market. I decided to connect them with the market and use their products as gift items,” says the young woman entrepreneur.
Creating livelihood during Covid 19
This women entrepreneur being recognized couple of times for her initiative to promote local art and craft, selling through online and offline platforms is now into manufacturing and trading of Covid19 Supplies across the state.
Nazia has been creating livelihood for Self Help Groups (SHGs) and women from marginalised section of the society by providing them with an opportunity of making masks to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and other items during the pandemic.
Manufacturing goods locally
Nazia told Chalgenius, “We never knew that that we would ever be stitching masks to PPE Kits. It came all of a sudden and we just jumped in with the intentions to help and save lives. The demand of reusable masks and sanitizers were high and the transportation also suffered. The disruption actually made us thing to produce it locally.”
Dealing in PPEs kits and other products
Since the lockdown, Nazia Ali is involved in making and trading masks through SHG’s and women entrepreneurs, meeting the rising demand for PPE Kits, Masks, sanitizers and gloves. With all the lockdown restrictions and transportation glitches, she managed to supply the bulk requirements to corporate and non-profits, “We have delivered almost 8-9 thousand masks along with sanitizer and hand wash. The clients were both corporate and NGOs.”
