Environmental hazards of marble slurry in Rajasthan
Marble slurry is one of the major problems in Rajasthan and especially in Udaipur. The increase presence of slurry leads to water clogging, increasing alkalinity of the topsoil and loss of soil fertility. It can also harms the water environment creating hazards to water animals and plants. The dust generated can also blanket the surroundings and cause breathing problems.
Youths concerned about environment
Alpana Pandey, a 26-year-old physics post-graduate from Udaipur, and her school friend Abhishek Maheshwari, a software engineer from the same city were worried about the harmful impacts of marble slurry on environment.
The duo decided to find a permanent solution to the problem, “The huge quantity of slurry from marble is a major problem in Udaipur. We are both environment lovers and were concerned about its growing impact on environment. We thought of find a permanent solution to the problem,” said Alpana to Chalgenius.
Idea to make eco-friendly paper
The duo, after doing a research came up with an idea of making eco-friendly paper, Estonmate, out of marble slurry, “Our eco-friendly paper comprises 80 percent of marble slurry and rest High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and some binders. The material is totally bio-degradable and eco-friendly,” Abhishek told Chalgenius.
Use in eco-commerce companies
He further said that they are planning to provide eco-friendly paper to the e-commerce companies as packaging material. The start-up is in prototype stage.
