Gaupethi soaring new heights
Naresh Kaushik always had a passion about saving cows’ lives and from 2008 he started making rigorous efforts to save lives of the bovine considered as a sacred animal in the Hindu religion.
The history
He says that he started making products from cow dung and urine (Gau Mutra) between 2008 and 2010 which laid the foundation of his company Gaupethi. It was then when he made his mind to further consolidate his business-cum-social service.
One of his unique offerings is wood made out of cow dung which is predominantly used for performing Havan at homes. He started getting lots of orders from the Arya Samaj and the Brahman society across Haryana. He informs that he makes Havan wood by mixing dung with a particular variety of a tree called ‘Maida’ which works as a binding agent. After mixing these two things, he puts the mixture into iron moulds to give them shape and then they are left to dry. After a few days, the Havan wood is ready to be sold.
Not taking it as a business
“I am not at all taking this as a business. For the past eight years, I have been training people to save cows. I have trained over 20,000 people to make products from cow dung and urine. Now, my two kids are running the business and I am running campaigns,” Kaushik says.
A Rs 250 gram packet of Havan wood is being sold at Rs 50. He says he gets a bulk of orders from West Bengal because of certain factors.
He started Gaupathy at Hisar in Haryana and now the company has a worldwide reach. He says in order to save cows’ lives; he travelled across the country to run a ‘save cows’ campaign and hundreds of people got connected who became his customers for buying cow dung products.
Covid-19 impact
His son has joined his family business which used to have turnover of Rs 50 lakh before the Covid-19 lockdown. Kaushik informs that because of the global pandemic, he expects turnover in 2020-21 to be around Rs 36 lakh. Even though he has incurred losses due to logistical issues, Kaushik believes that this is temporary phase and he would soon make up all the losses.
A gamut of products
He deals in 25 items and some of them include utensil bar, bath soap, dant manjan, shampoo, facepack, Gaumutra Ark, googal dhoop, hair oil, hand wash, Hawan Samidha and Gaughrit.
He says that googal dhoop, handwash and Hawan woods are some of the most selling items of his company.
