At a time, when the Covid pandemic has increased concerns of proper healthcare and hygiene along with a huge demand for healthcare products and services, three engineering graduates of Jadavpur University in Kolkata have launched an artificial intelligence-based platform to help pharma companies to leverage the emerging markets. Spare a few minutes to know more about them
About Data Sutram
Kolkata-based Data Sutram, operated by Extrapolate Advisors Pvt Ltd, was founded in 2018 by three 24-year old engineering graduates from Jadavpur University, Rajit Bhattacharya, Aisik Paul and Ankit Das. The start-up helps companies by pinpointing new locations for them to expand, improve the performance of existing assets (both physical and digital), and micro-target the right audience for their products.
The beginning
“When we were in our third-year at Jadavpur University we were involved in two projects that motivated us to launch this start-up. Firstly, Government of West Bengal’s project named ‘Maatir Katha’ where we used satellite data to help farmers to plan the crops that should be grown,” said Aisik.
“The second one was with retailers wherein we predicted the demand of products. It was after completing these projects in third-year itself that Data Sutram was conceived. All three of us were batch mates and together decided not to appear for the placements. We started our company when we were studying in our fourth-year,” said Aisik.
Areas of operation
There are around 15-20 clients mostly in the field of healthcare and finance. The company currently focuses on retail-specific sectors such as pharmacy, fast-moving consumer goods and grocery. It plans to expand to the financial services, agri-tech, and media and entertainment sectors.
How Data Sutram help in scaling up business?
“We help companies with information on where to open shop or market products. At Data Sutram we suggest new locations that would be profitable and will be able to reach out to maximum number of customers,” said Rajit adding that he and Aisik studied Electronics Engineering & Ankit studied Chemical Engineering at JU.
Data Sutram effective during Covid time
Rajit said that Data Sutram’s platform enable companies to identify areas to deliver goods during the lockdown to curtail the spread of the Covid pandemic. In the pharma sector, it helps in identifying areas of demand and thereby helping in planning the distribution.
Covid vaccination distribution can make data mapping more efficient
“According to the World Health Organisation, the absence of a judicious plan to streamline vaccine delivery will result in a mismanaged and inequitable distribution. This means that there will hoarding in some places and intense shortage in others, resulting in price spikes and all kinds of hurdles. Thus, data mapping is one of the best answers and there is certainty that it will help facilitate efficient distribution of COVID-19 vaccines,” said Rajit.
