Jan Vikas Mission Trust, a non-profit, has been distributing free ration kits to the migrant labourers in the slums of Delhi who do not have documents in order to get essential commodities from the government.
Starvation bigger danger than coronavirus
As the nationwide toll of people getting affected with coronavirus rise unabated, thousands of people now stand at the brink of starvation. Despite the assurances of the state governments to provide food, the swelling numbers of migrants is making difficult for the administration to fill the hungry belly of hungry citizens.
In this hour of crisis, Jan Vikas Mission Trust, a non-profit based in Delhi has been giving free ration to daily wage labourers living in slums of the national capital who have nowhere to go during the lockdown.
Free ration to migrant labourers without any official documents
Over 35 volunteers of Jan Vikas Mission Trust has been roaming in the four slums of Delhi distributing free rations to people, “Our volunteers have been distributing free kits of essential commodities to the daily wage labourers. The food items include 5 kg of rice, and 10 kg of Wheat flour, cooking oil, pulses, salt, bathing soap and a detergent. The price of the kit is Rs 551.00. We have distributed such kits to around 1000 people,” said RS Puri, the founder of the non-profit adding that the free ration is being distributed at Tilak Nagar, Vikas Puri and Barrar square areas of Delhi.
Aim is to contain migration
He further said, that the aim of distributing the essential commodities to stop migration of people who had come from far flung areas to work in Delhi, “We are basically free food to those daily labourers who do not have any documents to get government help. They are mostly involved in construction field and also do odd jobs for livelihood.”
Soon, he is going to distribute health kits among these people.
Puri said that Jan Vikas Mission Trust runs on the donations from well-wishers and the donors get tax exemption from Income tax department.

Vikas Mission Trust formed last year works on providing education, health care to migrant labourer settled in Delhi that do not have any local documents to get support from the government in different schemes. They also work on women empowerment by training them in stitching and other jobs.
