In order to help the farmers, who often find themselves at the receiving end because of lack of cold storage facilities, Tan90 has something unique to offer to keep their produce fresh and safe irrespective of the harsh weather conditions.
Tan90 is working on a mission to reach out to the marginal farmers with affordable energy-efficient cold chain solutions.
India is the second largest agro-producer and 47% of the farmers’ produce gets wastage annually. Most of the wastage happens at the farm gate, due to lack of infrastructure to grade or to reduce post-harvest losses. It is not a hidden fact that our farmers face tremendous hard ships and work in the scorching heat and not get paid proportionally despite toiling hard.
A team of three Ph.D. students namely Soumalya Mukherjee, Rajanikant Rai, and Shiv Sharma from IIT Madras believe in magic and as per them the magic is only short of waving a wand.
The team from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras which has founded Tan90 has developed Box90, P90 and SOFTBOX90 portable cold storage to keep perishable items like vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish, shrimps and milk products safe.
Products are fine-tuned and curated to the needs of all users (and can be used by farmers as well as aggregators alike) to transport meat, fish, greens, milk and milk products and exotic products such as mushrooms. Being modular, Tan90 enables users to use any logistics
What it does?
“We are working on a mission to enable and democratise cold storage logistics. We are endeavouring to give freedom to our farmers to transport their produce by any means of transportation without compromising on the quality. We have developed portable small cold storage devices or boxes that can hold the temperature for prolonged periods, even with frequent opening,” says Soumalya Mukherjee, co-founder, Tan90 Thermal Solutions told Chalgenius.
Each of the portable cold storage is powered by proprietary thermal panels that get frozen thrice as fast as compared to other gel pads available in the market. It not only reduces the operational costs, but also increases the turn-around time.
Why small cold storage box?
When asked why one would prefer a small box over refrigerated vans, he replies that farmers can easily put such boxes at the back of their cycle or two-wheeler which is convenient.
Reefer trucks have high operational costs, limiting their penetration in the rural segment.
It saves cost
Tan90 Thermal Solutions’ offering claims that it can reduce daily operational cost by 30 percent as compared to traditional ice-boxes which is phenomenal. As compared to brick and mortar cold chain chain solutions, there is a 50% savings on capital costs, says Kushnaman Shukla, who heads the Business Development in Tan90.
Rajanikant Rai told Chalgenius that he is proactively working with Tamil Nadu government and the talks are going on with Kerala government as well to offer the company’s offering to the farmers and fishermen. Tan90 products are being used by customers spread across 12 states in India. Users come from a wide range of domains: agriculture, confectioneries, frozen food segments as well.
