A group of volunteers from Needy Students Welfare, a non-profit in Punjab has been distributing free ration to poor people who are too poor to afford during coronavirus outbreak
The poor is facing the severe brunt of coronavirus pandemic that has virtually locked people inside their houses. The entire country has been following the government’s directives on lockdown but there are some who have come forward to feed those on the verge of starvation.
Needy Students Welfare supplying free rations to the poor
One among them is Needy Students Welfare, a non-profit based in Punjab. Needy Students Welfare has been supplying free rations to poor households in Phillaur town at Jalandhar district of Punjab. Over 12 volunteers of the non-profit has been supplying essential food commodities like rice, flour, tea, soyabeans among other items to those who cannot afford them, “We are giving free home deliveries of the daily ration to poor people who have no money to buy them. We started our work from the day of Janata curfew (March 22) announced by the PM,” said Rakesh Kumar, a volunteer of Needy Students Welfare.
Food items worth Rs 1 lakh already supplied to over 100 families
Rakesh said, that the members of the Needy Students Welfare deliver the food items on their two-wheelers and also on cars depending upon the location of the beneficiary, “We have so far supplied ration worth Rs 1 lakh to 100 families in Phillaur town and the surrounding areas of 20 kilometres for the past one week. We have been given passes by the administration for hassle free movement during the lockdown,” said Jatin, another volunteer.
About Needy Students Welfare
It is a non-profit that was started three years ago to provide books and arrange school fees for students who cannot bear the expenses of education. It has over 100 volunteers and depends on voluntary contributions from the well-wishers for charity. They also arrange school and college admissions for poor students.
