Decided to work for upliftment of farmers

Unlike his colleagues, Jai Prakash Sharma didn’t opt for high-flying job after completing his Master of Business Administration (MBA). The 38-year-old rather decided to help farmers in getting good prices for their produce. He felt that farmers were deprived of their economic rights because of lack of knowledge and marketing for their crops.

Launched mentor rural in 2010

Sharma who belongs from Gaya district in Bihar hails from a farming background with his father involved in farming decided to find a solution.

Eventually, he launched Mentor Rural, a global platform for rural development to provide end-to-end solutions from soil to price management to farmers in 2010, “We are addressing the most pressing challenges of our farmers as well as rural communities for the purpose of agriculture & rural development. It takes care of the poorest, particularly farmers from first and last, laced with a beyond the horizon synergistic capability and vision,” told Jay Prakash to Chalgenius.

The working model

Sharma says that they work on three formats with farmers, “The farmers can lease their land for farming and take a share of the produce, and they can also work on equal share of profits with us. We also supply seeds and plants to the farmers and provide them other inputs. Our supervisor makes the field visit and tries to arrange a suitable buyer for the produce offering high prices.”

His wife kshma Kumari who is the director of mentor rural told Chalgenius that the start-up focuses on four parameters to increase income of farmers that includes the sowing cost, increase the production, and maintain good quality of produce so that they can get good price for their produce.

Over 1200 farmers benefitted

“We have already changed the lives of 1200 farmers in Gaya district and have helped them to increase their income,” told Ambuj Kumar, Chief Technology Officer of the start-up.

Sharma told Chalgenius that they advise farmers on cultivating those crops that have a demand in the market, “The farmers often fail to get the right produce because they do not keep a tab with the demand. We guide them on cultivating those crops that are in demand. It helps them to increase their income. The start-up has been incubated at Bihar Agricultural University at Sabour in Bhagalpur.
