Meet this gutsy woman entrepreneur from Kolkata who fought life battles and now helping start-ups in their legal matters

The bitter experiences of working at several reputed legal services companies finally led a Kolkata-based lawyer with over 30 years of experience to start her own law firm. Spare a few minutes to know about the inspiring life.
About the founder
With a B.Com LLB degree, Sumitra Choudhary has over 30 years of experience of working in the legal services industry.
Starting her career as an advocate in Calcutta High Court, she has worked in top intellectual property law firms in India and has an experience in handling national, international clients in trademarks post-registration, litigation, IPAB hearings & ROC matters. She also has competency in Copyrights, Geographical Indication, Company law & Beyond.
Running an own firm is more challenging than working at reputed firms.
Wasting her talent at wrong places
“After working as a senior trade mark attorney at a law firm for over 17 years my services were suddenly terminated within a 10-minute notice without giving any reason in August, 2019. Despite devoting so many years of my career to that company I did not receive the respect that I deserved,” says Sumitra Chowdhury while narrating her life journey.
She soon moved to Chennai to join LR Swami & Co as head of litigation department. But after working there for nine months, she met with an accident and had to undergo a surgery.
“But soon, I returned to Kolkata and realized that I have been wasting my talent at the wrong places. It was then that my son, who is an engineer by profession, suggested that I come up with my own law firm. I am also skilled in Trademark Infringement, Legal Writing, Licensing, and Joint Ventures.
She started Chambers IP in March 2021 with the help of her son.”
Life not smooth
For Sumitra the initial days were full of hurdles. “Working under a big brand and running your own organization are completely different things. When I worked at the reputed legal services companies my sole responsibility was the duties entrusted upon me. But, the major challenge is convincing people,” she says.
“We have to start from the scratch and services are provided only after one is convinced. We are trying our best to make our mark and with the divine blessings we have managed to overcome the initial difficulties,” explained Sumitra.

Services provided
Chambers IP deals with any kind of property/ marital/ societal/ criminal conflict, offers trademark services as per requirement, provides intellectual property management consulting and copyright.
Moreover, it also provides patent consultancy services and covers a broad range of corporate topics. It also offers notary services, affidavit services and attestations.
How is Chambers IP different?
“We study a case very carefully before going ahead. We work professionally and ethically with a result oriented approach. We are strongly dedicated to our work and our services are remarkable. This apart, we provide prompt and responsible responses at affordable charges,” said Sumitra.
