Encyclopedia of cars
Sunny Kollannur who runs S.K. Automobiles in Kolkata is not just an individual. He is in fact a walking encyclopedia about cars. After all, he has sold over 5000 cars in a career spanning nearly three decades.
The 50-year-old says that he not only acts as a mentor to the people purchasing their dream cars but also guides them in the entire process till the car reaches their households. He is also thereafter the sales to deal with any sort of complications resulting from it.
Lawyer turned car consultant
The affable entrepreneur who welcomes every visitor with a broad smile on his face laughs that he wanted to carry his father’s legacy by becoming a lawyer but the car bug hit him and he decided to venture into it, “I was born in Kerala but my family shifted to Kolkata when I was just a toddler. My father was a lawyer and I also wanted to continue the legacy. But destiny had other plans for me,” he says while taking a trip down the memory lane.
Started his first job
Soon after completing his graduation from St. Xavier’s College (Kolkata) in 1994, he began to work in esanda finanz and Leasing Limited, a subsidiary of renowned ANZ Grindleys Bank.
He also joined the legal course at Calcutta University, “The classes used to get over in the morning and I had ample time in my hands to utilize during the day. I took up the job to earn some pocket money. My work involved contacting the potential customers whose lists were shared by the bank and close the car sales after doing all kinds of negotiations. But I started liking the work as the returns were good and decided to continue,” he says.
It was his sheer honesty and dedication that earned him his first cheque of Rs10, 500 in 1995, quite a big money in those days.
Started S.K. automobiles in 2006
He then left no stone unturned to work for his success. In 1998, he started his own company SK Consultants under which he not only sold old and new cars at a discounted price but also financed them through banks at moderate interest. In 2004, he formed the parent company SK automobiles.
Sold over 5000 cars and buys old cars
Since then, there has been no looking back for Sunny who is known in the automobile market for his honesty and his word of mouth, “We have sold over 5000 cars till date. We not only provide the best cars to customers at discounted rates but also help to finance them through banks at minimum interest. We also negotiate with the dealers to give the best rates to customers looking for new cars. We try to provide the best cars to customers as per their budget. We sell all types of cars and also buy old cars.”
Trust remains his biggest asset
He adds with pride that almost all car consultants that were doing business with him during the 1990s have quit the market but he still is going strong, “We continue to sell 20-30 cars in a month despite the pandemic because our trust remains our biggest asset. We don’t lose contact with the customer after the sale but our work in fact starts once the customer buys the vehicle.”
“We are in constant touch with our customers and guide them if they have further issues. My success has been possible because most of my customers are there for the past several years and they still continue to do business with me.”
