A 30-year-old entrepreneur is on a mission to offer unadulterated milk to the people of Siliguri. He has also been keeping the environment clean by delivering the milk in e-rickshaws. Spare a few minutes to know more about his laudable initiative.
Man on a mission
Adhiraj Agarwal hails from an upper middle class family. He could have easily joined the ancestral business and lived a comfortable life. But easy life was not for him. He is on a mission to feed pure cow milk to the residents of Siliguri in West Bengal…
Adulterated milk made him sick
The city of Siliguri is better known as the gateway of North Eastern states like Sikkim and others. The family of Adhiraj have been living here for generations. He was born and brought up here but what caused him problem was the quality of milk that he drank every day, “It used to bloat my stomach and cause pain. Sometimes, I even had diarrhoea and other health complications. I realized that the quality of milk was not good. I thought that so many were drinking the same cow milk and could have been facing the same issues,” he says as he takes a trip down the memory lane.
Plastic pouch bad for environment
“I also found that milk was generally delivered in plastic pouches that was neither good for environment nor for the body. I wanted to stop this practise too.
After giving a careful thought, he came up with a solution. Adhiraj decided to start a dairy farm that would provide unadulterated fresh milk to the city dwellers.
Started Godhuli Milk in 2018
With this noble thought in mind, he began his dairy business in July 2018 with the brand name Godhuli milk. He set up the farm on the outskirts of the city on a family land, “We purchased 60 cows of HF breed from Bengaluru and brought them in Siliguri. We started by harvesting the milk from our cows and then packing it in glass bottles rather than plastic pouches as it was being practised by other companies. We also supply milk to the army which is a matter of pride for us.”
Instant hit with customers
Adhiraj says that his concept of providing fresh unadulterated milk was liked by customers, “We were quick to gain market as customers really liked the quality of our milk. We not only provide fresh milk to people but also feed the bovines with organic food that has 7-8 items that includes maize, grains, soya and others.”
Quite true to his words, Godhuli milk that started by selling 200 litres of milk every day in 2018 that has now increased to 1500 litres daily, “We are still unable to meet the demand that is around 2500 litres of milk daily. We are thinking to increase the number of cows. At present, we have 140 cows and 80 calves. The milk is delivered within 6-7 hours of being milked. Our turnover has increased to 3.5 crore. We also sell pure ghee from the cow milk”
Delivery in e-rickshaws
Adhiraj is also taking care of environment while delivering the milk, “We use e-vehicles to deliver the milk in Siliguri. It is our contribution towards keeping the society clean. Our e-rickshaws are stationed in various parts of the city. The milk from our farm is shifted in vehicles to the city where battery run vehicles take them to respective houses.”
How to place an order
The Company works on the system of cash recharge wallet for orders. Customers have to download the app and add money to the wallet to get the milk. The recharge has to be done once the money exhausts as it works on prepaid basis. The booking can also be done by calling 7479036001
“I am trying to add value to the society by offering fresh milk to the people that would help to keep them healthy especially during Covid. Our sales have also increased during pandemic.”
