The journey
Kolkata based Rizwan Zaman (37) who has founded a food-tech startup, Chefrome, is on a mission to offer authentic home-cooked food to corporate and individuals. The startup encourages women who have passion for cooking and offers them employment to promote Micro-Entrepreneurship.
The idea
Zaman says he got the idea of empowering women after he in his childhood saw his mother being dependent on his father for every single penny. He says that in his 10 years of corporate life, he had craved for homemade authentic food as he didn’t like carrying tiffin. He used to think of getting home-cooked food right to his work station. The two reasons led to the foundation of his initiative, Chefrome.
The origin
Chefrome started with one chef in a small locality of Mominpore in Kolkata six months back and now it has more than 130 chefs in its kitty who serve over 1,000 customers in over 30 corporate offices in the city of joy.
Challenges
Zaman says the greatest challenge he faced to set up this business was to convince himself to live with limited resources post quitting his job. Getting people to join a startup is tough, he says. “You literally have to sell yourself and a dream of the future to get someone to believe in your idea and work with you. The challenge till now I faced is not funds but customer acquisition, uniformity in the taste of the food and its uninterrupted supply from Mom-chefs. We even call them Frome chefs. Being profitable was another challenge as there are a plethora of deep discount options in the market,” Zaman told Chalgenius.
Background
Many of the team members are MBA and B Tech with little experience. He tries to leverage his decade of experience of working in the corporate world and startups with the aggression of his young team. He even has a State level cricketer in his team and he wish to recruit someone from the army as well.
Especiality
Chefrome delivers fresh and authentic home-cooked food with nominal price tag. It takes pre-orders to ensure fresh food and eliminate food wastage. The firm has a wide range of food options to choose from as every home chef has their own speciality. Besides, he dreams to build a platform to help a huge percentage of the women population to become self reliant.
The future plans
The firm wants to expand to other metro cities. He says that he is going to face more challenges in future because of established players launching their offerings in the home-cooked domain which could pose threat to small players because of deep discounts.
Recognitions & Awards
The startup is amongst #top50 in TiECon Kolkata 2020 amongst 900 odd startups from various states of India.
