Wanted to do social service
Tanisha Pandit, who hails from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, had an inclination towards social service since childhood. She used to take part in street plays to create awareness about the social evils prevalent in the society.
Lack of menstrual hygiene a major issue
The 19-year-old realised that menstrual hygiene was still a taboo in the society and women felt ashamed to discuss about it, “I found that most of the women living both in urban and rural areas, especially in slums, were reluctant to talk about menstrual hygiene which was a serious issue. I also found that poor women cannot afford to buy the sanitary napkins from the market,” Tanisha told Chalgenius.
Tanisha formed Ritva Foundation
Tanisha decided that the issue could only be sorted out if the women are trained to make reusable sanitary napkins. With this aim, she started Ritva foundation, a non-profit organisation, in May 2019, “I realised that most of the women living in slums cannot afford to buy sanitary napkins every month. I decided to train women in making the sanitary pads,” she told Chalgenius.
Trained over 200 women in pad making
She says, that she faced some challenges during the initial phase as it was considered a social stigma but things are better now, “We have trained over 200 women in slums of Bhopal in making sanitary napkins. The pads can be made in the houses and are sustainable and eco-friendly. We also ran pad pandemic campaign during the lockdown where we gave online training to women to make pads,” told the gutsy girl to Chalgenius who is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts Program from Delhi University.
Distributed over 20,000 sanitary napkins
Her Ritva Foundation has so far distributed free sanitary napkins to over 20,000 women since inception, “We are also starting operations in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi.”
