Working to make people healthy
Kolkata-based Sudip Chattopadhyay and his wife Ruth are on a mission of creating a big group of organic producers to promote organic farming and make people aware of consuming healthy food.
Chattopadhyay has successfully added 22 organic producers into his group which helps him secure organic products and sell them at affordable prices to the people.
“We are not only helping the farmers but we are uplifting their lives by focusing on the community development side. Forty percent of the income generated from the initiative goes to the community development purpose,” he told Chalgenius.
The duo is also trying to change the food habits of people by creating awareness to avoid consuming all purpose flour commonly known as Maida, refined sugar and refined oil.
Humble effort to solve food security problems
Sudip Chattopadhyay and his wife Ruth are avid travellers. They love to explore offbeat places and stay among rural life and consume local food. The couple often go out to venture in the silent but beautiful places in the country.
During one such trip, they realised that villagers were living a healthier life by consuming the organic and chemical free food items while the urbanites were getting prone to diseases because of adulterated food available in the market. Paushtik Life was founded as a result of extensive travels, travails, and good wishes across the length and breadth of the country and interacting with farmers, co-operatives, producer companies.
Part of Bhoomi Ka Project
He is also part of the ‘Bhoomi Ka’ project which is not only helping small and marginal farmers to increase their income but have also been providing safe and healthy food to people.
Bhoomi Ka Project was started in 2016 by Welthungerhilfe and its partner organizations like Development Research Communication and Services Centre (DRCSC) living farms, centre For World Solidarity and others in 2016.
Organic food being expensive is a myth
He says that it’s a general myth that organic food is costly. “It not at all much expensive when compared to the traditional farm products that use pesticides but organic food is good for health,” he told Chalgenius.
“One must have noticed that organic food products available at the shopping malls are expensive because of several factors. But in our model, we buy organic produce directly from the farmers with least profit margin and sell it directly to the customers at affordable prices. Our focus is to make organic products affordable by keeping low margin and make people lives healthy,” Chattopadhyay told Chalgenius.
