Aim to connect adventure with business

Two friends Sudipta Bhaskar Saikia and Deboprasad Das based out of Assam went to Jagriti Yatra last year. They were so inspired by it that they decided to start a similar venture in North East to not only promote the tourism from the North East but also to connect the local entrepreneurs from their counterparts in rest of the country to create business opportunities.

What is Jagriti Yatra?

Jagriti Yatra is an initiative of Jagriti Sewa Sansthan, a non-governmental organization that promotes entrepreneurship. The initiative was launched in 2008. It is a 15-day long, national train journey that takes people to 8000 kilometres across the length and breadth of the country to understand and build the India of smaller towns and villages through enterprise.

Trying to tab the potential of North East

Soon, after their return, the duo discussed the idea with their colleagues who also become interested in it, “We felt hat North East has a lot of potential in terms of tourism and also business but the former has been given much importance but it also produces lot of indigenous items that can create huge demand in other parts of the country,” said Sudipta to Chalgenius.

Eventually, it led to the formation of Notheast Yatra in February, this year with six founders. The founders are Deboprasad Das (33), Sanjana Borthakur (27), Sudipta Bhaskar Saikia (23), Sasanka Sekhar Baruah (23), Anupam Sahu (23), Ankita Biswas (22). The Startup is based at Jorhat in Assam.

Connecting businessmen with local entrepreneurs

North East Yatra has a unique concept of functioning. It wants to take 60 yatris(travellers) on famous tourists places of North East based in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland that are known for their pristine beauty and also business hub, “The aim is to help the entrepreneurs from other parts of the country to connect with local entrepreneurs and help them to look for business opportunities. It is a perfect opportunity to grow local business and strike deals in the lap of idyllic nature,” said Anupam to Chalgenius.
He further said that the guests would stay at guest houses, hotels and would relish local cuisine amidst the nature.

60 yatris to 10 destinations in 8 days

North East Yatra offers a trip to ten places in eight days of North East covering 1500 kilometres. Some of them include Jorhat, Kaziranga, Sualkuchi, Shillong, Cherapunji, Guwahati, Sarthebari and others, “We would accept only those people who are above 20 years of age and would also provide a trip to Dzukou valley in Nagaland but it would depend upon the discretion of the guest as the trip involves trekking. Our package would cost around 25k-35k including all expenses but a trip to Dzukou would be charged extra,” said Ankita to Chalgenius.

Micro enterprises of North East

“We are trying make people understand the traditional micro enterprises of Northeast and to explore possibilities which might throw up ideas for solutions to challenges and also might bring out opportunities for yatris,” said Deboprasad.
“They would get to understand how a syncratic balance exist between nature and human in the region and how this has been achieved by some stupendous efforts in the field of conservation involving experts and communities.”
The Yatris will experience these and interact with the change makers to get into an engaging and stimulating experience, he added.

Covid hit the plans

The team was supposed to start the bookings this year, but Covid 19 altered their plans and expects to make a fresh start by next year.
