A 51-year-old entrepreneur has been changing the fortunes of youths living in remote and tribal areas of Chhattisgarh by turning them into micro-entrepreneurs. He has achieved a target of Rs 20 lakhs. Spare a few minutes to laud his initiative…..

Chhattisgarh- a remote and rough terrain

The state of Chhattisgarh is surrounded by dense forest cover and remote hamlets where accessibility is an issue. The lack of access also leads to limited livelihood opportunities. The forest cover in the state is 55,674 Km Sq, which is 41.18 percent of the state’s geographical area.
In such a scenario, an entrepreneur has been trying desperately to change the lives of the tribal youths through its own innovative business.

Churning out rural entrepreneurs

Priyjeet Bose, the entrepreneur based out of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, around 120 kilometres from Raipur, the state capital has been doing a commendable job by creating micro entrepreneurs out of Artificial Insemination Workers which are commonly referred as Private Artificial Insemination Worker (PAIW) in Chhattisgarh.

What are PAIWs

The PAIWs are basically involved in Inseminating cows in rural villages and do not have any government jobs. They earn a paltry sum of Rs 5000-Rs 6000 per month after toiling hard throughout the day and visiting remote hamlets which are also located in Maoist areas,” said Priyjeet Bose, the founder of BPN Agro.
“We founded the company in 2018 and began to train these workers on inseminating goats and other livestock. We also trained them in vaccinations of livestock and also on soil testing and other vital areas of farming. It helped them to prove useful to the farmers too leading to an increase in monthly income which has risen to around Rs 11000 per month,” said Kamlesh Kushwaha, the co-founder.
“Our income depends upon the medicines and feed that we supply for livestock. The PAIWs buy these items from us which brings us profit.”
Out of 26 districts of Chhattisgarh the company has managed to reach out to 16 districts.

The start-up has been incubated at IIM Calcutta and NAIM(National Institute Of Agricultural Marketing) Jaipur.

The motivation

The area where Priyjeet grew up comprises 44% forest and 42% of the people are tribals. Their livelihood is based on agriculture or livestock while youths are unskilled or semi-skilled. “Thus in order to bring in an overall development the first move should be capacity building. I understood that whatever has to be done should be done at the grass root level and nobody would come from outside to improve the situation. This is what I did and in the process converted them to micro entrepreneurs.”

“My motto was to increase rural employment along with improving veterinary facilities and increase livestock production. On one hand I wanted to generate employment opportunity for youths and on the second hand help livestock farmers with timely vaccination facilities and medical treatment. Thus BPN Agro was set up in 2018 to provide end to end services and marketing to agriculture and livestock farmers using micro entrepreneur network,” Priyjeet told chalgenius.com.

About the founder

There was always a passion to work for the tribal community where he grew up always. After completing his BSc in Geology, Priyjeet worked in the poultry sector and then in civil contractor shop. Finally he decided to concentrate on his dream project.

Future ahead

“Plans are afoot to set up Farmer Development Centres (FDC) in every block of the state. These centres would provide farmers all kinds of assistance ranging from production to marketing. 1000 agriculture and livestock farmers would be attached to an FDC. Priyajeet has managed to set up one such FDC and plans to come up with 10 more within 15 June.
