A start-up in Bihar has been trying to increase the income of the farmers by connecting them directly with the customers and retailers. Want to know how they are doing it? Continue to read.
Farmers’ problems gave the idea of start-up
When Rajesh Kumar returned to his Karimpur village at Patna district in Bihar after passing out NIT from Raipur last year, he found that the farmers in the village were still grappling traditional problems of finding right seeds and fertilizers for their farms.
The 25-year-old also felt that middlemen were taking the major cut of the business while farmers were left with marginal income. He decided to do something for it, “I hail from the family of farmers. I found that farmers were neither having complete knowledge about the seeds and fertilizers to be used nor they understood the market well. They often ended up with minimum income or even losses while the middlemen laughed their way to the bank. I thought of doing something about it,” said Rajesh to Chalgenius.
Green Supply to bridge the gap
In 2019, Rajesh started Green Supply Private limited to bridge the gap between the farmers and consumers. He thought the best way to help farmers would be to eliminate the middlemen, “I decided that farmers would only be benefitted if their produce reaches directly to households and retailers,” he told Chalgenius.
Vegetables procured directly from farmers
Green Supply Private Limited procures farm fresh produce from the farmers and sells them to retails and consumers in Patna and outskirts, “Initially, we started selling the vegetables to the local markets where the rates were higher but then we realized that direct selling to consumers and retailers will help farmers to generate more income. The aim was to have last mile connectivity with farmers,” Rajesh told Chalgenius.
How the model works?
The start-up has appointed a village headman who informs Green Supply about the problems farmers are facing in terms of procuring seeds, fertilizers and other issues. The start-up then guides the headmen about it who in turn addresses the issues of the farmers, “The headman also informs us to about the vegetables which are ready for collection. Our employees then collect them in vehicles and sell them to consumers. We take orders through whatsapp, app and online booking,” Rajesh said.
Enhancing livelihood of over a thousand farmers
Green Supply is working with one-thousand farmers in around 30 villages in the outskirts of Patna, “The model has tremendous potential of scaling up across Bihar. We are trying to implement it in different parts of the state. It would help farmers to double their income,” he added. The start-up has been incubated at Bihar Entrepreneurs Association (BEA) that has been doing commendable job to promote start-ups in Bihar.
