Farmers’ plight moves a school teacher to start honey trade in rural Bengal

0

The plight of honey farmers touched Mahbub Alam, a school teacher from Murshidabad in West Bengal so much so that he along with his four friends turned to entrepreneurship for bailing them out.

The group of five friends has established an organic honey processing unit ‘Basundhara Organic Uddyog’ wherein honey is purchased directly from the farmers and then marketed by them. “We found that the honey farmers were being deprived as they were being paid very low rates and the payments too were irregular. We got a good response when we approached them with our idea of procuring honey from them,” said Alam.

Surveys revealed that organic honey sold in the markets is not only very costly but the nutritional value is also low as they are processed, he claimed.

The venture helps farmers get a good price and provide quality honey at reasonable rates to people. Its unique selling point is the wide range of varieties and comes in various flavours like Lithci, Mango, Mustard, Sundarban, Eucalyptus Honey and Multi Floral Honey.

The organic honey has now made inroads into the local markets of Malda and Murshidabad as well as a few places in Kolkata.

Thinking about how to get a taste of the natural organic honey? Just a phone call may help you get the product delivered at your doorstep.
