DMO witnesses massive rise during lockdown

DeliverMy Orders (DMO), a start-up based in Ranchi, the state capital of Jharkhand has registered an 80 percent rise in its business since the lockdown was announced on March 24.

The start-up supplies all kinds of items except those illegal to households in Ranchi. The start-up was founded by two cousins, Sanutosh Ranjan and Shashi Gupta, both in their mid 20s, in February 2019.

Lockdown offers perfect opportunity

During the lockdown, they have been delivering essential commodities to the people. The founders say that they were catering to 2000 customers’prior to the lockdown which has now jumped to 10,000 people, “We have witnessed a massive increase during the lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak. We are working overnight to deal with the surge in customers,” said Sanutosh to Chalgenius.

Orders taken through phone calls and app

Sanutosh further told Chalgenius that it takes 45 minutes for them to deliver the goods after taking order,“We have also increased the numbers of delivery boys to 31 from mere 4 prior to the lockdown. We also offer on-call facilities to the customers during the lockdown where they can call the delivery boys and change their orders when the goods are being packed in shops. We take orders through phone calls and app.”

DMO has freelance employees for delivering goods in Ranchi. They charge Rs 30 for 2 kilometres and Rs 5 for every one kilometre if the order exceeds the 2 kilometres distance.

It all began in 2016

Shashi told Chalgenius that the initiative was started way back in 2016 during his college days at BIT Mesra, “The College is located in outskirts of Ranchi and it was a major difficultly for students to get items of daily use. I discussed with my cousin Sanutosh and thought of providing daily items to students by charging some commission. We made a whatsapp group where students were asked to list their orders. The orders were then sent to Sanutosh who was in the main city. He used to purchase and gave the goods to bus drivers who then handed over them to me.”

Shashi said that the business took off well but they had to close it temporarily as they wanted to concentrate on their studies, “We decided to revive on completion of our education. We want to scale the business and lockdown has provided us with a perfect opportunity to reach to more people because of the restrictions in movement.”
