A school teacher is creating awareness about Corona on wheels in Bengal

The coronavirus pandemic has forced people to stay indoors for longer periods but a government school teacher in Bengal has turned his two-wheeler into awareness vehicle and has been relentlessly covering several kilometres every day to alert people against the deadly virus.

In the line of duty

Extraordinary times require extraordinary people to step up and become a role model for others. The announcement of lockdown due to coronavirus has forced people to stay indoors but there are some who discarded their homely comforts to save people from the pandemic. One among them is Tuhin Subhra Mandal, a government school teacher at Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal.

Tuhin has named his two-wheeler as Corona On Wheels

The 41-year-old has been covering several kilometres on his scooty at Balurghat and adjoining areas everyday to create awareness regarding coronavirus by giving short speeches and distributing pamphlets.

After the suspension of classes, Tuhin didn’t sit inside the house rather than he decided to step out and assist the administration in their awareness drive. He has also pasted a banner on his scooty describing his two-wheeler as Corona on Wheels, “I felt that the time was to serve the society and reach to maximum number of people in the hour of crisis. I have been visiting different localities and villages to alert people about social distancing and ways to keep safe from the virus.”

Campaign starts from early morning hours

Tuhin leaves home early morning everyday and travels on his scooty for several kilometres in far-off remote villages of the district informing people to wash their hands frequently and consult doctors if they have any Covid-19 like symptoms. So far, Tuhin has reached upto one-thousand people around five villages of the district since the staring of his campaign from 16 March on both social and real platforms. Despite the lockdown, he has decided to continue the awareness drive while adhering to the rules lay down by the administration.

Besides, Tuhin is also the secretary of Dishari Sankolpo, a non-profit involved in social and environmental activities. Tuhin along with the members are also distributing leaflets among people suggesting ways to prevent the spread of virus. The organisation is working closely with the department of health and family welfare. They are also running a pro-active campaign to save river Atrai in Balurghat.
