Satish wanted to work for the state
Satish Kumar Mahto, who hails from Jharkhand, took up a job in a private company in Delhi soon after completing his PGDM from IITTM, Bhubaneshwar. But his mind was somewhere else. He wanted to return to his home state and do something for the people. Satish realised that Jharkhand is a treasure trove of natural resources which are not being put to proper use. He decided to commercialise the products made from natural resources to increase the income of farmers and growers.
Feedko agrokart launched in 2016
With an aim to benefit the marginal farmers, he founded Feedko agrokart in 2016. The aim was not only to create a market for natural products but also to help farmers increase their income, “I felt that farmers are the most deprived section of the society but not getting enough returns of their hard work. The middlemen were the real gainers as they were selling the produce at high prices to consumers. I decided to connect the farmers directly to the retail outlets and wholesalers. Besides, the state has vast forest cover which is a treasure trove of natural products,” said Satish to Chalgenius.
Challenges at the beginning
He says that the work was easy said than done as most of the people were sceptical about his motive, “It was difficult initially and I had to incur huge losses as it was tough to convince people regarding our concept. It was really a bad start for the first six months. We even found it difficult to dispose of the procured vegetables as customers often didn’t return to pick goods even after placing orders,” he told Chalgenius.
Two tones of vegetables sold everyday
But his hard work paid off. Feedko agrokart is now selling around 2 tonnes of vegetables every day, “We collect the vegetables from the farmers and sell them to retailers, super market, processing unit, commercial kitchen etc. We are running in profits,” Satish told Chalgenius adding that the start-up is currently working with 400 farmers in Ranchi district.
Selling natural products
Besides, Feedko agrokart is also promoting natural products of Jharkhand like Kala haldi (Black turmeric) and amba haldi (mango ginger) among others. Satish says that he has already got bulk orders from sellers across the country. The start-up has been incubated at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Innovation Lab (ABVIL) of Jharkhand government that has doing commendable job to promote start-ups.
