The journey

Twenty nine year old Snjog Datta (29) from Darjeeling is endeavouring to become a successful entrepreneur by offering authentic food products made in Darjeeling and Kalimpong to people living in far off places.
Datta, a former journalist, founded Daammee, an e-commerce platform on May 24 this year to serve people living outside West Bengal craving for Darjeeling and north east food.
Datta, an alumni of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata went to St. Joseph’s – North Point, Darjeeling & Himali Boarding School, Kurseong is a former journalist.
With an investment of Rs 1 lakh, Datta took the decision of launching his venture amid the lockdown imposed due to Covid-19. He did a lot of research and worked on marketing strategy before rolling out Daammee.

History behind Daammee

He told Chalgenius that during his Delhi days when he used to be a scribe, he faced hardships in getting authentic Darjeeling food. He says he had to cough up Rs 480-Rs 500 to have a bowl of Gundruk (it is a fermented leafy green vegetable and a popular food in Nepal) at Delhi based restaurants and it was not original in flavour as they use a lot of vinegar in it. Gundruk is early available in Darjeeling and it not at all expensive there. Even radish pickle was not easily available in Delhi.

Products and offerings

Daammee has a wide range of products like Gundruk, smoked pork, smoked fried fish, dried beef, pork curry, kinema (dry), bamboo shoot pickle, Nankhatai, Dry Timbur- Sichuan Pepper, Sesame and Groundnut Powder Achaar, Chhurpi among many others. They also have Khada scarf, Buddhist prayer items, incense, face masks and shopping bags etc.

Good orders

In these two months, he has received good orders in May and June and in July they have already got over 150 orders. Snjog says he is happy to receive good response from people in short span of time.
Dutta says these things are easily available in the north east states but people living in Delhi, western and southern India often face trouble in getting them. He says major share of sale comes from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

USP

He told Chalgenius that high quality and affordable prices are the USP of his products and give the Daammee an edge to other such companies.

Future plans

In the next 2-3 years, Datta aims to resolve and strengthen logistics issues and cater to all major metro cities. He wants to make Daammee a household name not only for its food products but all types of art and craft that come from Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
